This is the terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline in Valdez. On Aug.1, 1977 the first tanker-full of oil issued forth from the pipeline. In 1989, the tanker Exxon Valdez left the port without the escorts that regulations had once required and the captain under the influence of booze. The ship rammed a reef, spilling 11 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound.
