The Alaskan Pipeline
Oil was 1st discovered on Alaska's north slope at Prudhoe Bay in March 1968. The Pipeline is 789 miles long. It starts at Prudhoe Bay and it extends to Valdez - it crosses 3 mountain ranges and 70 rivers or streams. The temperatures along the pipeline route vary from as much as 100 degrees F. in summer to more than 75 degrees below zero in the winter. It has to not only account for the freeze and thaw but also crosses a couple of earthquake faults. What an amazing engineering feat!
